As a “discovery” of the drug’s potential side effects, the study has found.
The research, published in the journal Neurology, found that the drug is associated with more serious side effects, including priapism, a prolonged erection of the penis, a sudden decrease in sexual ability, and priapism-associated herpes.
The study, led by Dr. Eric Koeppe, a urology specialist at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia, was conducted by the Urology Institute of the National Institutes of Health.
“This is the first study to evaluate the relationship between Cialis and priapism and to determine the long-term safety of this drug in patients with priapism,” said Koeppe. “We are very interested in patients with priapism, but it’s very important that we have a safe and effective treatment.”
Koeppe and his colleagues studied the effects of Cialis on 20,000 men who suffered from erectile dysfunction and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Their study showed that, at two months of treatment, patients had a significantly lower rate of priapism, but also had a significantly higher rate of priapism-associated herpes.
“Our findings show that Cialis is associated with more serious side effects than other medications,” Koeppe said. “These effects are most often seen with higher doses of Cialis or in patients with underlying health conditions.”
In addition, he and his colleagues noted that the medication did not decrease the risk of developing priapism.
“In patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia, the incidence of priapism has been reported to be low,” Koeppe said. “In patients with BPH, we found that the use of Cialis was associated with a significant reduction in the likelihood of developing priapism-related herpes.”
Koeppe also pointed out that there are other medications that might also cause these side effects, including sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis), and vardenafil (Levitra).
“There is a wide range of drugs, and it is not uncommon for patients to have side effects when taking these drugs,” Koeppe said. “But the side effects in patients who take these drugs may be much more common than we have been seeing.”
Koeppe and his colleagues analyzed data from the National Drug Abuse and Drug Abuse Information System (NDADSAI), a database of drugs that has been used for decades to determine drug and drug metabolite (DB) exposure in patients with medical conditions. The NDA’s database includes data on drug and/or drug metabolite (DM) exposure, which is used to evaluate drug and/or drug metabolite (DRM) levels in patients with conditions that could be associated with drug or drug metabolite exposure. Drugs and DM exposure are also used to evaluate the relationship between drug and DM exposure.Data from the NDA are collected from more than 100,000 people, including nearly 200,000 in the United States and many more at the University of Pennsylvania Health System in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
“We know that there are many factors that can lead to the occurrence of adverse effects and that may influence the way a drug or drug metabolite (DB) is used to be used,” Koeppe said. “However, the data we have collected from the NDA, which is an individual database, are very important for us to use, and we are very interested in patients with priapism, because of the possible relationship between drug and DM exposure and the risk of developing priapism-associated herpes.”
Koeppe said he would like to have a more thorough understanding of the relationship between drug and DM exposure.
“If you are taking the drug, you are at a higher risk of developing priapism-associated herpes,” Koeppe said. “You will be very much more likely to develop priapism-associated herpes than you would be if you were taking the placebo.”
The study’s lead author, Dr. David A. Healy, MD, director of the department of urology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, is also a consultant to Eli Lilly and Co., Inc. and Novartis AG. He has written extensively about the drug and its possible adverse effects.
The U. S.1.Nitrates (e.g., nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate): Cialis and nitrates both lower blood pressure. Taking them together can cause a significant and potentially life-threatening drop in blood pressure (hypotension), leading to dizziness, fainting, or even heart attack or stroke. It is contraindicated to use Cialis with nitrates or recreational "poppers" (amyl nitrites).
2.Alpha-blockers (e.g., prazosin, terazosin, tamsulosin): Both Cialis and alpha-blockers relax blood vessels, which can lead to excessive blood pressure reduction when used together.
